In 1836, a rail line was built between Atlanta and Chattanooga with a station on the basement level; During the 1920s, viaducts elevated the street system to permit better traffic flow and merchants moved to the second floor, leaving old storefronts below for storage; after decades of neglect, Underground Atlanta re-opened in 1969 and again in 1989 as a retail-entertainment venue
