DESCRIPTION: Opened in 1976 with 1,371 acres, the zoo features 1100 animals from more than 250 species primarily representing Africa and North America; discover more than 1,100 animals and 40,000 plants along five miles of shaded pathways; throughout the 1980s, Africa exhibits opened and in 1984 the zoo received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums; from 1993-96, North America exhibits completed, showcasing the animals and habitats of the Sonora Desert; recently, the Zoo acquired adjacent land to bring the total to over 2,000 acres to form the largest natural-habitat zoo in the world; it has plans for an Asia exhibit, convention center and hotel in the near future
