TRAINS

The utilitarian Newport News Train Station, located at 9304 Warwick Blvd (map), is open daily 7:30a-8p. Amtrak Northeast Regional service in the Boston-Providence-NYC-Newark-Philadelphia-Wilmington-Baltimore-DC-Richmond-Newport News corridor stops here every 2-3 hours daily.  Unfortunately, all train routes to the Hampton Roads metro area terminate in Newport News.  A major taxi stand is also outside the Newport News Train Station.

Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach service is available to continue to onwards to the Amtrak Norfolk Station located at 215 West York Street and the Amtrak Virginia Beach Station located at 19th Street and Pacific Ave.

Via a series of projects underway,
Amtrak and the State of Virginia are re-constructing track, building bridges separating roads from rail, and improving signaling to enable Acela high-speed rail service from Washington to Richmond and Newport News some years from now.

DRIVING

Norfolk & Virginia Beach Freeways & Bridges are generally well maintained, but signage may be lacking in some areas. The ride across US Route 13 Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel is a thrill for most because you can see the water around you as you submerge from the middle of the bay into two tunnels. There aren't enough lanes for the traffic, so when there's an accident it can feel a bit claustrophobic in one of the tunnels. I-64 Freeway is often crowded with traffic coming from all points on the East Coast to Virginia Beach during warm weather. Allow extra time traversing this freeway on warm weekends:

13    US Route Suffolk, Norfolk and Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel
64    Interstate Freeway from Richmond to Norfolk
164    State Freeway/Parkway connects I-264 to Portsmouth to Norfolk
171    Victory Blvd connects I-64 to Poquoson
264    Virginia Beach-Norfolk Expressway
464    Interstate freeway between I-264 and I-64 in Chesapeake
564    Interstate freeway from I-64 to Norfolk Naval Complex
664    Interstate freeway from Portsmouth to Newport News and I-64
