Japanese American National Museum
DESCRIPTION: This informative and evocative museum and library will broaden your horizons about Japanese Americans contributions to our nation in both good and bad; it also shows the housing linkage between Japanese Americans and African Americans in LA; the museum's showcase exhibit covers World War II when 120,000 Japanese Americans were interned in U.S. prison camps after the attack on Pearl Harbor; rather than remain interred, many men chose to prove their American loyalty by enlisting in the U.S. Army, where they were assigned to fight the Germans in Europe; their regiment became the most highly decorated unit during WWII

DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1973 and originally host to the infamous ‘The Egg and the Eye’ omelet restaurant; today, one experiences folk art & craft exhibitions that range from the historical to contemporary, traditional to eclectic in this nearly 5,000 square foot building; a visit is always an enlightening because it presents slices of the artistic merger between social order and individual creativity while offering insight into global values and lifestyles by revealing similarities amongst diverse cultures; for example, in 2010, CAFAM featured The Fool's Journey - The History & Symbolism of the Tarot, a 22 poster-size card exhibit that is at once laudable and thought-provoking; craft collectors will appreciate the the many books, jewelry, pendants and baubles in the eye-catching gift shop; since exhibits change every 3-4 months, feel free to drop in whenever you visit LACMA across the street

DESCRIPTION: Founded in 1993, this 165,000 square foot museum complex is the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center whose mission is to challenge visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and understand the Jewish Holocaust in both its historical and contemporary contexts like Darfur; in the Tolerancenter, hands-on experiential and audio-visual exhibits focus on the dynamics of racism and prejudice in America; the Holocaust Exhibit lets you witness how events unfolded in 1920s Germany that led to the rise of Hitler's Nazi policy to exterminate all Jews during World War II; Finding Our Families Finding Ourselves is the newest multimedia exhibit showcasing American diversity through the personal histories of Billy Crystal, Maya Angelou, Carlos Santana, Joe Torre and others; Artifacts & Documents of the Holocaust include original letters of Anne Frank and artifacts from the Auschwitz death camp; the museum is named in honor of Simon Wiesenthal (1908-2005) who's life work Nazis in hiding after the war for their crimes against humanity; the most emotionally moving part of a visit is when you hear Survivor Testimonies from death camp survivors

DESCRIPTION: It is no exaggeration to say this is one of America’s most beautiful museums; reopened in 2006 after a 12 years of loving renovation – no detail was left untouched in this hilltop villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean; modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, a first-century Roman country house near Pompeii, the museum houses 1200 pieces in its permanent collection of priceless Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities; all pieces are originals, with one exception being debated for its authenticity; the most remarkable antiquities are the statue of Hercules, Orpheus, a sarcophagus depicting the life of Achilles, and various pieces in the Women of Antiquity gallery; a close examination of the marble floors also reveals multi-patterned artwork by some the world’s best marble craftsmen; a dramatic a 450-seat outdoor theater puts a cherry on top with occasional performances – word is they will soon host ancient Greek plays
