Black Towns

Many years ago the publisher had the pleasure of meeting Morris Turner. An outgrowth of the meeting, Morris was kind enough to lend us his expertise about historic Black Towns stretching from Florida to Alaska.  It was both amazing of learn of black towns and resort areas like Nicodemus, Allensworth, Highland Beach and Idlewild. It really made you stick your chest out with pride. But It was equally humbling to learn about Rosewood, Negro Slide, Darkytown and Nigger Heaven and other racially-motivated names foisted on Black communities to further ghetto-ize them. So ashamed of that past, most counties and states have stricken their names from public records.   We can all be thankful America has made great progress since then, but we should never forget less history repeat itself, if not with Black folks then with other Americans.   Please share your thoughts with other travelers on this important subject.
